  Puzungalorotti or steamed rice masala cake is a malabari dish that can be served as a dinner dish or a tea time snack. It is made with rice and onion fish masala. The healthy benefit of puzungalorotti is that it is cooked in steam instead of frying in oil. The flavor of coconut masala and the rice cake is a tasty dish that you all want to taste. Normally we prepare it during Ramzan or some special occasions. You may try it in your home by following the steps that written below. You may use any fish that you have or can be made with chicken too. I am sure your children will like this dish, you may send this dish to their lunch box for their school. As this is a dry dish it is convenient for them to have lunch. You may prepare at evenings and can be used for your next breakfast.
Puzungapathil is so spicy and delicious; you just need not few but a little more ingredients like onion, tomato, coriander, shallots, etc. I prefer for fish as it is so yummy and I love sea food. This is an amazing dish. You just need to put some efforts and the result comes amazingly awesome. So do try this yummy and healthy dish, free from oil means free from cholesterol…!!



    Grinding the rice
  1. Soak the rice for at least 6 to 8 hours.
  2. Grind it in a grinder by adding grated coconut, fennel and small onion.
  3. Place it in a vessel and keep it aside.
  4. Making the coconut gravy
  5. Grind the coconut by adding fennel and 3 or 4 small onion,turmeric powder,chilly powder and coriander powder and water in a mixer jar for 1 or 2 spin.
  6. Preparing the fish masala
  7. Clean the fish and marinate it with salt ,turmeric powder,and chilly powder.
  8. Fry it in a frying pan.
  9. Heat another curry pan and pour 2 to 3 tbsp oil in it.Put sliced onion and sauté it by adding salt  until it becomes golden color.
  10. Add tomatoes and green chillies and curry  leaves into it and sauté well until it becomes soft.
  11. Pour the grinded coconut gravy into it.stir well. Add salt into it.let it boil for  a few minutes.
  12. Put the fried fish pieces or prawns into the masala or gravy and mix it.
  13. Boil the gravy for few minutes to form a thick gravy.
  14. Making the puzungalorotti/Steamed rice masala cake
  15. Take a plantain leaf or a foil paper and spread little oil over it.
  16. Take a ball sized roll of rice and flatten it.
  18. Put the fish gravy over the flattened rice.This is the base part.
  19. Take another rice ball and flatten it too in a plantain leaf.spread little gravy over it.this will be the covering.
  20. Place the covering over the base part and cover it.
  21. Press along the sides and  let the leaf over it.
  22. Cook it in a steam cooker(adachemb) for atleast  half an hour.check whether it is cooked or else cook it for another few minutes.
  23. You can place 2 or 3 rice cakes one above the other in a steam cooker and cook it altogether.
  24. Remove it from the steam cooker and serve it by cutting into pieces.
